Curing
Curing is the vital process that transforms liquid or malleable gel nail products, such as gel polish (shellac) or builder gel, into a hard, durable, and long-lasting finish. This transformation occurs through exposure to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet (UV) or LED light, a non-negotiable step for a lasting manicure.
The magic happens thanks to photoinitiators within the gel formula. When these special compounds absorb energy from UV or LED light, they trigger a chemical reaction called polymerization. This reaction creates strong polymer chains that solidify the product, effectively bonding it to your natural nail or extension. Each layer of gel must be fully cured under the lamp before applying the next to ensure proper adhesion, strength, and a flawless finish.
Curing is absolutely essential for any nail service involving gel products, whether it's a gel polish manicure, gel extensions, or a gel top coat. Unlike traditional nail polish, which air-dries as solvents evaporate, gel products *do not dry*; they *cure* or *harden* under light. This process is what gives gels their superior shine, incredible durability, chip resistance, and allows for more intricate and controlled application techniques, making them a salon favorite.
A common mistake is "sub-curing," which happens when the gel doesn't receive enough light or time in the lamp. This can leave the gel sticky, lacking its intended hardness, and in severe cases, may lead to allergic reactions or premature lifting. Always use the correct type of lamp for your specific product and strictly follow the manufacturer's recommended curing times. Don't rush this critical step for beautiful, healthy, and long-lasting nails!
