It's generally preferred over clippers or scissors for precise shaping, as it minimizes the risk of breaking or chipping the nail. It's also crucial for preparing the nail edge before polish application, ensuring a clean and defined finish. Unlike a "buffer," which smooths the nail surface, the file focuses on the edge. While a "drill" (electric file) is used for more intensive work, especially on artificial nails, a manual nail file is perfect for regular maintenance and finishing touches. A common mistake is using a harsh, sawing motion back and forth, which can weaken and delaminate natural nails. Always file gently and, if possible, in one direction, from the outer edge towards the center.
