Acetone

ES: AcetonaDE: Aceton

Acetone is a powerful organic solvent and the primary active ingredient in many nail polish removers, especially those formulated for tougher nail enhancements. It’s your go-to product when you need to effectively remove gel polish, acrylic nails, or even stubborn glitter polishes that just won't budge with milder removers.

It works by dissolving the polymers and resins that make up nail polish, gel, or acrylic. In practice, you saturate a cotton ball or pad with pure acetone or a high-acetone remover, place it directly on the nail, and then wrap your fingertip with aluminum foil (the "foil wrap" method). Your body heat helps the acetone penetrate and soften the material, allowing it to be gently scraped or wiped away after a few minutes. Patience is key here; typically, you'll need to let it soak for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the thickness and type of product.

You'd primarily use acetone when dealing with gel manicures, acrylics, or hard-to-remove glitter polishes. Unlike non-acetone removers, which are gentler and only effective for regular nail lacquer, acetone is the most efficient and safest way to break down these more durable nail enhancements without resorting to excessive filing that could damage your natural nail plate. It's a strong product, but essential for maintaining nail health if you regularly wear these types of manicures.

A crucial tip: Acetone can be very drying to your nails and cuticles. Always follow up with a nourishing cuticle oil and a rich hand cream immediately after removal to restore moisture. Also, ensure you're working in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling the strong fumes.
