Gel removal with acetone
Gel removal with acetone is the most common and effective method for safely taking off soft gel nail products, such as gel polish, Shellac, or soak-off builder gels, from the natural nail. It involves using pure acetone, a powerful solvent, to dissolve the gel, allowing it to soften and lift so it can be gently removed without damaging the underlying nail plate.
The process typically begins by lightly filing the top surface of the gel polish to break the seal of the top coat. This crucial step allows the acetone to penetrate the gel more effectively. Next, a cotton ball or pad soaked in 100% pure acetone is placed directly onto each nail. To keep the acetone in contact with the gel and prevent evaporation, each finger is then wrapped tightly with aluminum foil or placed into specialized soak-off clips or dishes. The acetone is left to work for about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the specific gel product and its thickness. Once the gel has visibly softened, lifted, or appears "wrinkled," it is gently scraped away using an orange wood stick or a metal cuticle pusher. If any stubborn residue remains, the process can be repeated for a few more minutes.
This technique is specifically designed for removing soft gels, gel polishes, and soak-off builder gels. It is NOT suitable for hard gels or acrylics, which require professional filing for removal. Acetone removal is generally preferred over extensive filing because it is less abrasive to the natural nail, significantly reducing the risk of thinning or damage when performed correctly. It’s considered the safest and most efficient option for regular gel nail maintenance, ensuring your natural nails stay healthy underneath.
Always use 100% pure acetone for removal. Avoid using regular nail polish removers, even those containing acetone, as they are often diluted and contain other ingredients that make them less effective and potentially more drying in the long run. After removal, thoroughly moisturize your nails and cuticles with a rich cuticle oil and hand cream to counteract the drying effects of the acetone and promote nail health.
