The lunula is that distinctive, crescent-shaped, whitish area you can often see at the base of your fingernails, most prominently on your thumbs. It's actually the visible part of the nail matrix, which is the 'factory' responsible for producing new nail cells and where nail growth originates.

While not a tool you 'use,' the lunula's appearance offers valuable insights into nail health. Its lighter, opaque color is due to the newly formed nail cells being less keratinized and having a higher water content than the rest of the nail plate. As these cells mature and harden, they become transparent, forming the main body of the nail.
