Nail matrix

The nail matrix is the hidden powerhouse and true 'factory' of your nails, tucked away beneath the skin at the base of each finger, right where that visible whitish half-moon, the lunula, begins. It's a vital and extremely delicate part of the nail unit, solely responsible for producing all the cells that will form your visible nail plate.

Within the nail matrix, cells continuously divide and undergo keratinization, meaning they fill with a tough protein called keratin. These new cells constantly push the older ones forward, causing your nail to grow outwards. It's a fascinating and continuous process that dictates the health, shape, and thickness of your nail. Due to its protected location, the matrix is safe from most superficial damage, but it's incredibly sensitive to blunt force trauma or sustained pressure.
