Nail prep
Nail prep refers to the essential series of steps performed on the natural nail before applying any nail product, such as regular polish, gel polish, acrylics, or polygel. It's the foundational stage that ensures maximum adhesion and longevity for your manicure, making it the most critical step you should never skip for a professional, long-lasting result.
This process typically begins with thorough cleaning to remove any oils, dirt, or old polish. Next, the nails are shaped and filed to the desired length and form. Cuticles are gently pushed back, and any excess dead skin (pterygium) is carefully removed from the nail plate. A crucial step involves lightly buffing the nail plate with a fine-grit buffer to create a slightly textured, porous surface, which significantly improves product adhesion. Finally, a dehydrator and sometimes a primer are applied to remove moisture and chemically prepare the nail surface for the subsequent products.
Nail prep is non-negotiable for every type of manicure. It's vital for preventing premature lifting, chipping, and air bubbles, ensuring your manicure lasts as long as possible. Proper preparation creates a clean, dry, and receptive surface, allowing the nail product to bond securely to the natural nail. Skipping this step is the most common reason for poor retention and a short-lived manicure, leading to frustration and wasted effort.
A common mistake is touching the prepared nail surface with your fingers after applying the dehydrator. The natural oils from your skin can transfer back onto the nail, compromising adhesion. Always handle the nails carefully by the edges or use gloves to maintain a clean, oil-free surface, and ensure all your tools are clean and sterilized.
