Free edge seal

ES: Sellado de borde libreDE: Versiegelung der freien Kante

Free edge seal is a crucial technique in professional nail services, involving the application of nail product (like gel, acrylic, or polish) over and around the very tip of the natural nail or an extension. Its primary purpose is to encapsulate and protect the nail's edge, enhancing durability and preventing damage or lifting of the product.

This technique is performed by lightly dragging the brush with a small amount of product across the free edge, ensuring it wraps slightly underneath the tip. This creates a continuous, sealed barrier that prevents external elements like water, oils, and debris from penetrating between the nail plate and the applied product. It's vital to seal the free edge with every layer—base coat, color, and top coat—to achieve maximum longevity and adhesion, creating a strong, protective shield.

You'd use free edge sealing in virtually every nail service, from a simple gel polish application to complex acrylic or hard gel enhancements. It's essential for preventing "lifting" (despegue) of the product from the tip, chipping of polish, and for adding strength to the free edge, especially on longer or weaker nails. Without proper sealing, your manicure is prone to premature wear and tear, and the natural nail can become vulnerable. It's superior to just applying product on top because it offers comprehensive 360-degree protection.

A common mistake is overloading the brush when sealing the free edge. Too much product can create a bulky, unattractive edge or even flood the sidewalls, leading to early lifting. Always use a minimal amount of product and ensure the brush is almost dry when performing this step for a clean, durable finish.
