Lifting

ES: Despegue / levantamientoDE: Abheben

Lifting refers to the undesirable separation of a nail enhancement product—such as gel, acrylic, or gel polish—from the natural nail plate or a previously applied layer. This creates a visible gap, air pocket, or bubble, indicating a breakdown in the adhesion between the product and the nail. It's a common and frustrating issue that compromises the durability and aesthetic of a nail service.

This problem typically manifests at the edges of the nail, either near the cuticle line or at the free edge, and can progressively spread inward. Lifting isn't a technique or a product you “use”; rather, it's a structural failure that occurs due to various factors. Primary causes often include improper nail preparation, such as not thoroughly cleaning, dehydrating, or removing non-living cuticle from the nail plate. Other culprits are incorrect product application (e.g., flooding the cuticles, applying product too thickly, or not properly capping the free edge), undercuring gel products (subcurado), which leaves them soft and poorly adhered, or inadequate edge sealing (sellado-borde) that allows moisture or debris to penetrate beneath the product. Trauma to the nail or excessive natural nail oils can also contribute.

It's essential to address lifting immediately to prevent moisture and bacteria from getting trapped in the gap, which can lead to fungal or bacterial infections. A critical tip is to never pick or pull at lifted product, as this can cause significant damage to your natural nail. Instead, have a professional carefully file away the lifted area or remove and reapply the product. Proper, meticulous nail preparation and precise product application are your best defense against lifting.
