Forms (molds)
Nail forms, often referred to as molds, are disposable adhesive guides, typically made of paper or thin plastic, used by nail technicians to create nail enhancements. They are placed snugly under the free edge of the natural nail, acting as a temporary platform to sculpt and extend the nail using products like acrylic or builder gel, without the need for pre-made plastic tips.
To use them, the form is carefully fitted around the finger and under the natural nail, ensuring a seamless, stable surface with no gaps. The nail technician then applies the enhancement product (acrylic powder and monomer, or builder gel) directly onto the natural nail and extends it onto the form, building the desired length and shape layer by layer. Once the product has cured (for gel) or hardened (for acrylic), the form is gently removed, revealing the newly sculpted nail with its custom length and shape.
Forms are perfect for achieving a highly customized and natural-looking extension because they allow for precise shaping and a smooth transition from the natural nail. They offer greater versatility for creating various shapes like square, coffin, almond, or even dramatic stiletto nails, which might be challenging with standard tips. Many technicians prefer forms over tips for clients with a strong C-curve or when avoiding tip glue is desired. They're also excellent for repairing broken nails seamlessly. A common mistake is improper form application. If the form isn't perfectly flush with the natural nail, it can create a gap where product might seep underneath, leading to a weak structure, air bubbles, or an unsightly "ledge." Always ensure a snug, gap-free fit to prevent lifting and ensure durability.
