Nail "tips" are pre-formed extensions, typically crafted from durable ABS plastic or acrylic, designed to be adhered to the free edge of the natural nail. Their primary purpose is to instantly add length and provide a specific shape, serving as a crucial foundation for various nail enhancements such as acrylics, hard gel, or even as a base for gel polish on very short nails. They come in a wide array of shapes like square, almond, stiletto, and coffin, as well as different curvatures to perfectly match diverse natural nail beds.

The application process is precise: first, the correct size tip is selected for each nail, ensuring it fits snugly from sidewall to sidewall without gapping or overhanging. After preparing the natural nail, a small amount of specialized nail glue is applied to the contact area of the tip, which is then carefully pressed onto the free edge. Once securely bonded, the tip is trimmed and filed to the desired length and shape. Crucially, the seam where the tip meets the natural nail is gently blended down to create a smooth, seamless transition before any overlay product is applied, ensuring a natural look and strong adhesion.

You'd typically opt for nail tips when you desire immediate length and a robust base, especially if your natural nails are very short, weak, or if you're working on bitten nails. Unlike nail forms, which require building the entire extension from scratch with product, tips offer a pre-defined structure that significantly speeds up the application process and can be easier for beginners. They are also considerably more durable and customizable than simple press-on nails. A vital tip: always ensure the tip fits perfectly from sidewall to sidewall. Improper sizing or insufficient blending of the seam can lead to premature lifting, breakage, and potential damage to the natural nail.
